The Question Nobody Asks You
Before you sign anything, ask yourself why you want to serve, then keep asking why until the answer is truly yours.

Before you sign anything, ask yourself why you want to serve, then keep asking why until the answer is truly yours.
Almost everyone I've talked to started the same way. They googled a branch, called a recruiter and started on the paperwork.
Somewhere in all that, nobody stopped to ask the one thing that matters most. Why do you want to do this?
Not what branch. Not what job. Just... why.
GROUND TRUTH
Your first answer to "why" is usually borrowed from somebody else. Dig until you find the one that's yours, because that's the one that holds up on hard days.
01
Why does my why matter so much?
I was in for almost 6 years before someone finally asked me. I had reasons. College, money, a better path. But they were borrowed from other people. Not fully mine.
When things got hard, and they will, I didn't have a strong enough answer to hold onto. I couldn't stand my first two years.
The military will tell you what to do and how to do it from the day you sign. It won't spend a minute asking why you're there. That part is your job.
02
How do I find the real answer?
Use the 5 Whys. Your first answer is the surface. The honest one is a few layers down.
DO THIS
Write down your reason for joining.
Ask yourself, "Why does that matter to me?" Write the answer.
Ask why again. Each answer becomes the next question.
Do it five times in a row.
Stop when the answer feels true, specific and yours.
Here's what that can look like. I want a better life. Why? I don't want to be stuck. Why? I'm afraid that if I don't do something now, I never will. Now we're getting somewhere.
Most people never get past the first answer. The clarity lives past the surface.
03
What if I can't answer it yet?
Then you're not behind. You have more time than you think. A few extra weeks of clarity beats a fast yes you're not sure about.
WATCH OUT
Don't let pressure answer for you. Family, friends and the calendar can all push you to rush. Rushing makes you unclear, and unclear people make decisions they regret.
Write it out. Tell someone you trust. Don't move forward until you can say it out loud without hesitating.

● YOUR NEXT OBJECTIVE
Once your why is clear, see the whole road ahead. All seven phases, from today through MEPS and shipping out.
If you're thinking about the military, getting the whole map before you talk to a recruiter is the right move.
Appreciate you.
