MSO

Every first-time enlistment in the U.S. military carries an 8-year MSO. If you sign a 4-year active duty contract, you serve 4 years on active duty and then spend the remaining 4 in the IRR (Inactive Ready Reserve). During the IRR period, you are technically still subject to recall. Understanding your MSO prevents surprises when you plan to leave service.
